Can America Learn from Nineveh?

We are continuing in the messages based upon Dr. Stevenson's soon-to-be-published book **The Late, Great United States.

Many religious and political leaders and commentators such as Joseph Sewall, a reverend at the Old South Church in Boston in 1740, have, since even before America became a nation, warned of the need to seek the Lord with prayer and fasting leading to repentance in order, if possible, to cause God to turn away from the judgment that He has planned for America. Fisher Ames in 1805, coming from a political perspective, warned also that America was being drawn to destruction as the Niagara River draws with a relentless flow to the Falls. He warned against a "licentious democracy."

Scripture continually calls for man to turn back to God. Paul wrote in Romans: "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service (spiritual worship). And be not conformed (sischematizo - conform to another's pattern, or a same pattern) to this world (aion - the world, period of time, age): but be ye transformed (metamorphoo - change, transfigure, transform) by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove (dokimazo - prove, test, examine, allow, discern, recognize as genuine, deem worthy) what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." (Rom. 12:1-2).

These verses above are calling for the complete change of mind and in the thinking of the believer. In another place, scripture says that we have the mind of Christ.

The LORD spoke to His prophet, Ezekiel, about the important role of the spiritual watchman. Like an actual watchman, the spiritual watchman is always alert and listening for the Word of the LORD regarding approaching danger. The LORD then said to His prophet: "So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me." (Ezek. 33:7).

The LORD said that if the wicked man is not warned by the spiritual watchman that he will surely die, then "his blood will I require at thine hand." (V. 8). If the wicked man is warned but does not turn away from his wickedness, "...he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul." (v. 9)..."Therefore, O thou son of man, speak unto the house of Israel...'I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?" (v. 11).

Turn ye, America! Why will you die? This is a dangerous age, filled with deception. Heed the warning being given by the LORD.

The LORD, speaking to Jeremiah, His prophet, said: "At what instant I shall speak concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it; if that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them...Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good." (Jer. 18:7-11, excerpt).

The LORD told Israel: "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and see my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (2 Chron. 7:14). Nineveh was an exceedingly wicked city in Assyria, yet the LORD sent His reluctant prophet, Jonah, to them to warn them of His judgment against them. The LORD then spared them from His promised destruction because they heard His warning and repented of their evil. (see Jonah 3:5-10). Will America learn from Nineveh?

The prophet Isaiah wrote the Word of the LORD to God's people: "Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness. None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity." (Isa. 59:1-4 see also through v. 15). America is guilty of the same things spoken of here.

Jesus also warned His disciples of the coming dangers, He spoke of the deception of many, wars and ethnic group against ethnic group. Jesus also spoke of coming famines, pestilences, earthquakes, and the persecution of believers throughout all nations, false prophets who deceive and the abounding of iniquity. Many have turned against Christ because of the iniquity that abounds around us. Even some of the Church has supported wickedness through history including many of the churches of Germany who believed that Adolph Hitler was divinely appointed to save Germany.

Many are coming to Christ from Muslim nations and other beliefs as well, but in America, people are being arrested for speaking against what society calls "acceptable," but is not acceptable in the Word of God. Jesus said that the sign of Jonah would be the only sign given to this wicked and perverse generation, which is not only a sign of death and resurrection, but is also a sign of the mercy of God towards the sincere heart of repentance. God is not willing that America nor anyone should perish, but all to come to repentance. He is waiting to save. America, will you repent and turn back to the LORD?
