Mother's Day 2026*

According to The Bible Dictionary, the view of Scripture towards women, and mothers in particular, is very clear. In scripture, women are considered on the same plane as men, and due the same respect. The matriarchs have an equal voice in society in scripture. God commands us not only to honor our fathers, but to extend the same level of honor to our mothers. Scripture notes that the greatest duty of sons is to love, honor and obey their mothers. There are many religions around the world that do not have this same regard for women and mothers.

From the beginning, after God created man, He took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden: "And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden  thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in that day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." (Gen. 2:15-17). The LORD did not think it was good for the man to be alone, so He brought every beast created to Adam to see what he would call them: "And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a help meet for him. And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam...and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof...(And) made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man...And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed." (v. 18-25, excerpt).

The serpent later questioned the woman regarding the command of God not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, asking her "Yea, hath God said...?", which is the same lie that continues to trap mankind, and then assured the woman, "Ye shall not surely die." She took of the fruit of that forbidden tree and ate it and also gave it to her husband who was there with her, and he ate it also. (see Gen. 3:1-6).

As the LORD dealt with the aftermath of this fall into disobedience, He clothed the man and woman in animal skins, because the knowledge that they had acquired after eating of this tree opened their eyes to their nakedness and shame. The LORD told the woman that she would bring forth children, and her seed (men are considered to have "seed") would bruise/crush the head of the serpent: "And Adam called his wife's name Eve (khavvaw - life, living, life-giver); because she was the mother of all living." (v. 15-21, excerpt).

Proverbs 31:10-14, is the advice of a mother to her son regarding "a virtuous woman":

"Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates."

This woman not only sees to her own household with her talents and care, but she has a heart to give to others also. Her husband becomes honored in the gates of his community because of her godly works and character, and her family calls her blessed.

Christ was willing to lay down He life for His Bride, the believers. Because of this, the Church is willing to submit itself to Him. Peter also wrote of this for our own marriage relationships to follow this same pattern: "Likewise ye wives be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives." (2 Pet. 3:1). This is the influence that a woman of godly character and works has upon her household and even her community, as we saw above. For this reason, Peter wrote that a woman should not be ruled by the worldly immodest or revealing styles of the day that do not respect her spiritual status, and that values outward adornments that compromise and corrupt a woman's godly standards in the eyes of those who see her. The greatest adornment a godly woman can carry is her "meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price." (v. 3-4). Peter points out that the godly women, like Sarah the wife of Abraham, in an older time, were adorned in their trust in God and in their subjection unto their own husbands. (v. 5). These were women who valued and walked in their faith in God, and brought forth miraculous births because of that faith. (see Heb. 11:11-12).

The prophet Isaiah wrote the word of the LORD against the daughters of Zion, who wore clothes and jewelry that drew attention to themselves that will really cause stink instead of a sweet smell and burning instead of beauty. (Isa. 3:16-24). God hides His precious things because of their value, whether it is the gold, silver, or gems that are hidden by God in the earth, or pearls hidden in the ocean. Yet, the precious body of a woman that brings forth life and godliness is being exposed to all in these times.

Everlasting Covenant has always been a church that prays, particularly on Mother's Day, for the conception of children, even when doctors have said that conception, or the carrying of a child to full term was impossible. Many miraculous children have been born through these prayers. The LORD is the One who opens the womb and He is the One who answers prayers. If you have a heart's desire to conceive and carry a child, we pray in agreement with you this day to receive that miracle from Him.
